We can't recover from this history until we deal with it.
-Bryan Stevenson, Equal Justice Initiative-
In 2019, I went to Alabama to deal with my fear and shame about slavery and lynching. Looking directly at the horror that I had been running away from gave me peace and freedom, the exact opposite of what I thought would happen. I knew right away that I wanted to bring people to Alabama who were ready to begin the process of healing their wounds around race and white privilege. That's how Freedom Rail Tours started.
I take people to Montgomery*, Alabama, the Cradle of the Confederacy in the Heart of Dixie, to bear witness to the legacy of genocide, slavery, lynching, segregation and mass incarceration. The purpose of Freedom Rail Tours is to provide people with space and time to feel their feelings about enslavement, take an honest look at their internal conversation about racial differences and to expand beyond their identity as victim or perpetrator, oppressor or oppressed. *our tour also includes Selma, Birmingham and Greensboro, Alabama
Freedom Rail Tours is for people who are ready to embody the consciousness of peace and freedom and outgrow conditioned ways of seeing themselves and others. It’s for people who listen with respect to the voices of the impoverished, the imprisoned and those society has deemed unworthy.
Montgomery is special. The city tells stories that give you goosebumps, brings you to tears and transforms you.
Walk tunnels that brought enslaved Africans from the waterfront to the auction block. Visit Rosa Park’s apartment. Feel the energy of a warehouse that held enslaved people and is now a museum documenting the legacy of slavery. Meditate in the sanctuary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. Stand beneath steel pillars marked with names and places where lynchings occurred and sense the presence of those who were silenced.
